A Hatch cover build over a stairway acts as a vertical door for the stairway to the next level down (only). To block access to the next level up, you'd need a hatch on that level. so E h = 39,900 J (= 2100J/kg/˚C) 2. chanel vs down stairs dwarf fort*******Ramps are for traversing up/down and then one direction horizontally. You cannot have ramps stacked on top of each other and traverse directly upwards. They are basically just low effort stairs in a way, but they're useful for minecart tracks if you care to spend the time setting that up A spiral ramp has many, many less possibilities. A dwarf who has to avoid oncoming traffic recalculates the pathfinding. That said stairs are likely to be very marginally faster for journey length (at least when taking into account passing other creatures during the journey).

I've tried to visualize how stairs would actually be built in DF and gave up. Stairs are a "gamey" element in that they act as a point for an entity to transition between Z levels. You could think of it as more of a teleport up/down pad. In Dwarf Fortress stairs act more like an elevator taking a dwarf straight up or straight down. Stairs IRL take you laterally while taking you vertically. To go down with a ramp, all you need to do is make a channel anywhere. Channel a 5x5 area from the surface down to the aquifer with the center tile being a staircase. Channel one level of the aquifer at a time. The aquifer will leak water that will turn instantly into ice walls. If there are any solid tiles above the water it will stay liquid as it is considered indoors so make sure there is only open air above.Using up/down stairs (which go both up and down on the same tile) you can dig a vertical staircase of any length. A Hatch cover build over a stairway acts as a vertical door for the stairway to the next level down (only). To block access to the next level up, you'd need a hatch on that level.Stairs are fully capable of holding any amount of weight above them. An up stair or up/down stair will stop tiles falling during a cave-in; a down stair will not. However, when any stair tile is collapsed by a cave-in, the stairs disappear entirely.A channel is a hole dug in the ground or wall, which will mine out the z-level below, too. The designations menu can be accessed by d and provides the means to designate tiles for the dwarves to channel with the submenu h.

Travel time is presumably 2x the number of levels, as dwarves appear for two tiles per level. If the ramps were to be extended towards the centre, then a single dwarf moving up and down would appear on one tile per level, same as a vertical staircase. You can now connect the two with a build stair, Start the Build Stair designation on the Down stair and Finnish in the open level below, the stairs will now connect. It's the only way that I can find to breach from below.
